THOUGHTS ON MICROAGGRESSIONS, SOCIO CULTURAL TRAUMA AND THE PHENOMENOLOGICAL FIELD | June 2020
In this paper Bernadette O’Koon (Latuch) argues for the value of gestalt’s field perspective when it comes to understanding and responding to microaggressions.
The question of whether a micro aggression has taken place rests with the receiver of it, and as a microaggressor the onus on me is to respond from a place of grace rather than wishing to minimise what took place. Nonetheless aggressor and aggressed on can also meet by taking in the wider situation containing structured oppression whether connected with race, class, gender or other identity variables. These make micro aggressions inevitable, and whilst not taking away responsibility from the aggressor may support us to find compassion in a difficult situation.
